About the RJW Family Law Team
Russell Jones & Walker (RJW) has been representing police officers on all legal matters, including Family law, for over 50 years. As such they have developed extensive experience of the problems faced by police officers and have a proven track record of fighting and winning the difficult cases.
RJW's Family department which advises police officers on Family law-related matters, was further boosted this year with the arrival of Amanda McAlister and her team from Gorvins Solicitors.
It was approximately 10 years ago that Amanda started to represent police officers facing Family law disputes. At that time Amanda herself was married to a police officer and as a result was becoming inundated with police officers who were becoming frustrated at the lack of solicitors who had a detailed understanding of police culture, pay and more importantly police pensions. As such, those officers were paying over the odds for poor, ill informed legal advice which often resulted in detrimental financial settlements.
Amanda took on those cases and within months as a result of positive police officer recommendations, she was asked by a number of northern police Federations to provide a Family law service to Police Federation members. Amanda further developed her knowledge by spending three months working with the Greater Manchester pensions department.
By 2002 the encouraging client feedback and recommendations had spread to the South of the country and she was invited to provide a similar service for Thames Valley, Kent and Essex Police Federations.
Amanda has built a team of over 14 lawyers working in both the North and South of the country. All members of the team have undergone an intense training programme which ensures that they are fully familiar with all aspects of police culture, pay, pensions and shift patterns.

“Representing Police officers is never easy. There is a public and judicial perception that members of the Police are financially well off. It is not uncommon to hear a District Judge at the commencement of a case make reference to the officer’s golden handshake. At RJW we will fight to the end to ensure that our Police officer clients receive the best possible outcome for them and their loved ones” Amanda McAlister
